Mechanical Keyboards, Tested by Typing
A keyboard is judged by fingers, not features. We typed 214,000 recorded keystrokes across eight boards, logging switch feel, stabiliser rattle, deck flex and how each one sounded after a week of real work.
How We Tested
Our test bench
- Actuation force sampled across every switch type on test.
- Stabiliser rattle scored by three reviewers on a ten-point scale.
- Deck flex measured under a six-kilogram load.
- A seven-day acoustic wear-in under normal typing.
Feel Over Specs
The board with the most features was not the best to type on. Stabilisers were the deciding factor: a cheap board with well-tuned stabs felt better than an expensive one with rattle on the space bar.
| Board | Switches | Stabilisers | Flex | Score |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 75% alloy | Linear lubed | Clean | Low | 8.9 |
| TKL plastic | Tactile | Good | Medium | 8.4 |
| Full-size budget | Click | Rattle | High | 6.8 |
Buying tip
- A gasket mount and factory-lubed switches are worth more than an extra knob or screen you will touch twice.
